I first used one of these during a tornado-plagued evening and night at my cabin which is in a remote part of the national forest. I spent the night sleeping in a basement stairwell and was very pleased with the way the radio's alert-only function worked. In a remote area where there is very little to interfere with radio signals, this radio worked GREAT for me. So I decided to get one for my home in the city.
The first product that arrived was damaged during shipment - the tiny black knob for setting the radio on AM, SW, FM or weather band was broken off and had fallen inside the radio. was very gracious about crediting my purchase and listening to my comments about the product not having enough cushion in the box it was shipped in (I called and service was excellent). That it was rattling around inside the outer box seemed to me to be the reason why it was damaged - carriers are not exactly graceful with the packages and this was not packed well at all. I sent back the damaged radio and ordered another.
The second arrived promptly without damage. However, I would say now that the little black knobs are rather delicate. I have not broken any but they seem brittle to the touch so I am very careful when I turn them. I'm also careful when turning the hand crank knob. The cabin radio seemed to be less fragile - it is several years old and seems to be made of sturdier plastic.
Weather band reception in the city on my new radio is not very good. The radio seems to have a difficult time staying tuned in to the weather bands here and that shouldn't be. It has this problem regardless of power source - AC adapter, reg batteries, dynamo makes no difference. There are two weather stations that broadcast a strong signal in my area. My First Alert table top weather alert unit picks up the weather alerts constantly. Meanwhile, I can have the Voyager turned on weather band and it just loses the signal/fades out. I have had it set to alert and it does not alert (while the First Alert is going off)and then when you turn on the weather band it does not even pick up that signal unless you walk around the house with it, fiddle with the antenna, fiddle with the angle it is turned, etc. etc. That does not seem to be right. The radio at the cabin was not like this at all, it tuned in both alerts and the weather band without any fade out.
Now the funny thing is this new radio receives SW bands really well in the city. I used to have my Grundig Satellit 800 here and this little Voyager actually picks up more SW bands than the Satellit did (but the Satellit is now up at the cabin and wow! it sure shines up there). So go figure. I'm not sure if the problem is the radio or the type of interference here in the city - too many obstacles for the signals? I'm not real happy that I can't count on this new radio to alert me here. I will have to take it up to the cabin and see how it performs there and report back! |

| Radio has excellent reception and does a great job of rejecting unwanted agacent radio reception. All other features are excellent. The only needed item not on this radio is a backlit tuning dial for night time tuning reception. |

| This was a Fathers day gift for my dad and he really loved it! Actually we all did. For an hour or more after he opened it we all took turns looking at the features and I will probably order one for myself in the future. |

I was skeptical of buying this with the drastic mixed reviews. I feel compelled to share my own to hopefully help you. I was thoroughly satisfied with the radio. The instructions are simple ( you really don't even need them ). The device is quite user-friendly, has many features, and i had zero problems with reception living in rural NC. Having zero radio experience i was afraid the weather radio would be a pain to tune to. You simply click the knob til you hear it. Sound quality is perfectly fine, to be expected. I haven't had it long enough to review the battery life, but simply having the rechargable battery with solar (probably best preference) and hand-charge for emergency, i bought the AC Adaptor and it works fine. I'm 110% satisfied so far. I hope this helps. I did tons of looking around for good weather/solar radios and seem to have found the same mixed reviews with all of them. I was skeptical with all of them but decided to take a gamble on this one and it seems to be working fine.
Just adding another piece to my review. I'm picking up Alex Jones from Austin, TX on Shortwave 12.160MHz in Smithfield, NC. I can hear him clear as day. Amazing. A MUST HAVE. I did buy the extended antenna but I haven't tested it yet. With the clarity (in and out) of this broadcast without the antennta i'm certain it will be perfect once i run it to the roof of the house. Excellent buy. |

| I have owned this for a year. The third time I used the hand crank, the handle broke off. Battery seemed to take a long time to charge and would not stay charged for very long. When I would tune in a station, within a couple of minutes the station would drift out so I had to adjust and tune back the station I was listening to (this happened more frequently when used with the solar panel). Buy a portable clock radio that is cheaper and more reliable. |
