| | I purchased this Sony to fill in for a missing Cambridge Audio sub. For the price paid, this is an excellent value with useful features: Auto on, phase control, adjustable frequency cut, RCA or speaker wire inputs/outputs, and of course, level control. I listened to the sub, once adjusted, with a number of sources (CDs, vinyl): I'm a bit of an audiophile and I didn't find the Sony overly boomy. Look, this is an inexpensive sub and you're not going to get the bass quality of a $1,000 sub. This handsome 10" sub is fairly large so keep that in mind regarding placement. |

| I've owned a few subwoofers in my day and I'd have to rate the Sony SA-W2500 as "adequate". I know that's like saying the girl on the blind-date has a "good personality", but the Sony doesn't really do anything spectacular. I was looking for a budget replacement for an 8" 80w subwoofer that died and this was the one in the size and price range I was looking for.
The product arrived faster than was promised which was nice. Setup was VERY easy and adjustment was also fairly easy. The foot-print of this 10" 100W sub was actually smaller than my older 8" model by KLH. It does add nice low end rumble to movies and deep bass to music. It's a little muddy and lacks clarity and punch like my larger, more expensive 12" in my basement home theater. This sub was meant for my second home theater area with my older 5.1 equipment and DVD player, smaller TV, etc. It fills the bill very nicely.
Like I said before, the unit is small and unobtrusive in most settings and has an auto-on/off feature. If you're looking for a basic subwoofer to add a little extra punch in a smaller room and price is of utmost importance, give this one a look. If sound quality matters most, you probably aren't reading this review anyway! |

| | Being a sony product, I had no reservations about buying this unit. I have four Sony tower speakers and two mid range and they have worked flawlessly for 15 years. The price was one of the attractions that I couldn't pass up. I was using another brand of speaker wired SW that was fine but it couldn't handle some of the bass demands for Xbox games and some action cd movies. Fully adjustable with a standby setting, this SW has got it all. The first time I cranked it up with Xbox Gears Of War, it felt like you were right there in the battle zone. Great buy and great product, Vanns had it shipped and on my door step days before the estimated arrival date. I would definitely buy from them again. |

| | My old subwoofer went out on me and I was looking for a new one, I wanted something of at least equal power to my last one which isnt always easy when shopping for something like this online, after reading tons of reviews I decided to get this Subwoofer, first I must say that delivery was very quick, only couple days with standard shipping which was very nice. As for the subwoofer it was much better then any of my expectations. Gives a nice deep bass, can even feel it in other rooms and I havent even pushed it to its limits yet, very happy I bought this subwoofer. |

| Before I start this review, you should know that I am pretty well informed when it comes to speakers and audio.
After having owned this sub since January 2010, I think I can give a pretty detailed review on it. Basically, it's a quiet subwoofer good for low volumes and small rooms.
It does sound nice, though, at low volumes in a small room. If you're the kind of person who doesn't want a lot of low frequencies or high volumes and you really only want it for casual TV programming with the occasional movie, then this is the sub for you. It stays distortion free and reproduces the lows pretty nice at casual to low volumes. And it's relatively small for a subwoofer, so its size doesn't limit where you want to put it.
But if you're like me and you want a lot of bass to compliment loud speakers, seriously look elsewhere. I've tested this sub in a 10x13 bed room, a 12x22 living room, and a very large room (probably 15x40 or so). In all of the applications, it really doesn't sound good. I mean it's pretty obvious that it wouldn't fill a 15x40 room, but even for the living room and bed room applications, it still didn't fill the room. There were dead spots everywhere, no matter where you placed it, including the bed room.
And on top of all of that, something inside of the speaker enclosure or the driver itself broke, because now when I play the sub at medium to high volumes with low frequencies (below 50hz), the actual speaker cone looks like it's being sucked into the enclosure. That's pretty much the best way I can explain it. It gets distorted early on and because of the problem of it not moving normally, it just can't produce high volumes. Maybe there is a way to fix it, I don't really know. I tried sealing the port on the back with a sock just to see what would happen, and the cone moved normally. I don't know why, but it just does. But when I did seal off the port it lost a lot of volume and I was afraid the enclosure wasn't the right size to be sealed for that particular driver. It didn't always have this problem of being sucked into the enclosure, and I can't remember when it started having this problem, but even before when it still worked properly it just didn't put out high volumes.
I'm actually going to keep this sub though, and only push high frequencies through it (80hz-50hz), and now I'm going to buy a Klipsch Synergy Sub-12 to take up the remaining frequencies, as I know that is a very nice and loud subwoofer.
Overall, it's great for low volumes and higher frequencies, it's small and it looks pretty nice, but if you want high volumes with hard hitting lows, look elsewhere (especially 12" over 10" for hard hitting lows at high volumes). |
