Well worth $1002010-02-244 / 5
I am coming in at the tail end of putting together my in home recording studio. I recently purchase a pair of the Samson MediaOne 4A and a pair of the MediaOne 3A studio monitors. While the speakers provide excellent sound quality for their price (total $250) they lacked low end frequencies like many small to medium studio monitors do. Not wanting to drop a ton of money into a solution I came across this sub.

Appearance: Let's be honest... this speaker is ugly. There is no way around it. Once out of the box it looks more like an old television than a subwoofer. I realize that many people hide their subs so this may not be an issue. I would have preferred more of a sleek design but if place in a corner with the back facing the walls it's not so much of an eyesore. It is small enough that it can be hidden rather easily, under a desk or behind a plant. It seems to be solid wood and not particle board with a "wood" covering and the constructions seems to be pretty solid. While running cables I was able to push myself off the floor using it as leverage with no structural give.

Ease of Installation: It's a mono subwoofer.. there is nothing complicated about it. You run a single RCA cable to your audio source, plug in the electrical cord, and turn it on.

Sound: We have to keep in mind that we are talking about a $100 subwoofer here. Most quality subs run upwards of $400. That being said if you are expecting a $100 sub worth of sound you will not be disappointed but maybe even slightly impressed. You also have to keep in mind that this is a 100 watt PEAK speaker. I'm not sure what the rms is ratted at but I'm sure it's considerably lower. This will not shatter walls and will not shake the earth. If you're looking for a sub that will make your house sound like one of those cars with thousands of dollars worth of stereo upgrades you're looking in the wrong price range. What this sub will do is adequately add the low end frequencies to a set up that perhaps lacks those low ends. I listen to death metal and it seems to handle this style of music considerably well.

Overall this is a good sub for under $100 but I don't know that it's worth much more than $100. Once you get closer to the $200 range then you can start looking at some of Polk Audio's lower end models which not only look better but sound better overall. I would recommend this sub to anyone looking at a cheap way to introduce low ends to their current setup. I'm not sure how this would standup as a means to provide sound for big explosions and what not for movie viewing but for music in a small room it's a good choice.

Awesome subwoofer2010-02-145 / 5
Already knew this was an awesome subwoofer as I had purchased one for my husband last year. Since his birthday is December 24th I'm always low on ideas so I figured why not buy him a matching subwoofer for twice the sound? He absolutely loved it. Bought it here on from tiger direct because it was about $25 cheaper than retail. They had it shipped very fast so he got to open it on his birthday. Only complaint is that is came in the subwoofer box with picture on outside so it was visible to anyone had it been left in plain view.
BOOM BOOM2010-02-095 / 5
Subwoofer sounds good. Gives my bookshelf system that extra Boom Boom. Satisfied with price too.
Best Bang for the Buck2010-02-095 / 5
I received the subwoofer promptly at a very good price. The directions took a little time to figure out, but upon proper study, the installation and adjustment were great. The sound from this sub was outstanding. It has a nice feature that puts the sub into a standby like mode when no signal is present, like when muting during commercials. The adjustments were great, and I would recommend it highly.
Perfect for an upgrade2010-02-025 / 5
I am really enjoying this new addition to my Home Theater setup. I purchased it (in conjunction w/ a Sony STR-DH500 5.1-Channel A/V Receiver) in an effort to upgrade from my old HTIB (Samsung HT-Z310T 5.1-Channel Home Theater Surround Sound System) which had a passive 6" subwoofer. It sounded decent, but once I stopped living in a 3rd floor apartment, I decided to take the plunge.

It's heavy! (which is good, considering subs are mainly wood & magnets) It has plenty of deep bass and mid-range punch, so long as you set the levels correctly. I have yet to experience any distortion during normal/heavy use**. It even looks right at home next to my TV stand! (aesthetically)

If you're looking for the next step up from a very basic system, but you're not looking to drop $300+ on Bose or Klipsch, this is your happy medium. I love it!

Finally, the most consistent complaint I've read about this product was the auto-on feature. If you're watching anything with a lot of dialogue, it will shut itself off. When it comes on, you'll miss the first "hit" if there's an unexpected boom or explosion, and you'll hear a click when this happens. After a week of trial and error, I opted to disable said feature and leave it on all the time. It barely uses any power unless it's actually performing anyway.

**I leave the volume nob at about 80%, and just control the level in the mix from the receiver's menu. This seems to give me the perfect marriage of presence and boom, without entering into 'overkill' or distortion territory.
